M/n GNV SEALAND – Wheelhouse Upgrading
On board the M / n GNV SEALAND the telecommunications and navigation systems were supplied and installed by Compagnia Generale Telemar SpA, in compliance with the Italian regulations for navigation in the GMDSS A1 + A2 + A3 area for ro / ro passenger ships.
22.06.2022 – Recently, on the Rudder system and its Autopilot, a modernization project was implemented in order to increase the ship’s safety and performance: the work – carried out during the technical stop at the Palumbo Shipyard in the port of Malta – has extraordinarily unique characteristics, which led to an important synergy between the Telemar team and the GNV – Grandi Navi Veloci shipping company.
Currently, Telemar manages maintenance and Radio Licenses for the GMDSS stations and carries out the maintenance of some navigation equipment on a large part of the GNV fleet.
The work recently carried out on the M /v GNV SEALAND was a considerable commitment on behalf of three Telemar engineers who replaced the entire structure of the Rudder Wheel connected to the Sperry Marine Autopilot. The connections made from the bridge to the steering gear room were articulated and complex, in particular on the four pumps of the two rudders; in addition, new repeater commands were created on the port and starboard wings of the vessel : in total about 3km of cable was employed for the new connections and interfaces.
Thanks to the cooperation of highly qualified personnel on board, in particular the electrician and the carpenter, and thanks to the support of the Ship’s Superintendent, the work was completed by our engineers in 22 days, and the Sea Trials were carried out with success in presence of the Classification Society and the Port Authorities.
The success of this intervention has further consolidated the cooperation with GNV, with which Telemar aspires to team up and sail with the wind in our sails.
